"The Brain, The Body, and Me: Reclaiming My Life from PMDD"

Discover how I went from years of confusion and misdiagnosis to clarity and healing after uncovering the truth behind PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder). In this post, I explain the neurohormonal science behind PMDD, the emotional and physical toll it takes—especially during the luteal phase—and the evidence-based strategies that helped me find balance. This is a guide for anyone seeking understanding, support, and real solutions for a condition medicine still struggles to fully explain.

In this deeply personal post, I share my 15-year journey navigating life with undiagnosed Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)—a condition that silently shaped my emotions, relationships, and identity. Beyond the emotional struggles, PMDD is a complex neurohormonal disorder that affects the brain, body, and behavior, particularly during the luteal phase, the two weeks before menstruation.

During this time, women with PMDD often experience not just mood swings, anxiety, and depression—but also intense physical symptoms. These can include bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, insomnia, joint or muscle pain, gastrointestinal issues, and even coordination problems. These symptoms are not random—they’re part of a larger systemic shift happening within the body.

Biochemically, PMDD is linked to abnormal sensitivity to normal hormonal changes, particularly fluctuations in progesterone and its metabolite allopregnanolone. These shifts impact key neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA, which regulate mood, pain perception, and stress responses. The result is a dysregulation in the central nervous system that affects both mental clarity and physical stability.

This post explores how I moved from confusion and misdiagnosis to clarity and empowerment using a combination of neuroscience-based strategies, integrative therapies, and targeted medical support. I share the tools that helped me reclaim balance—tools that every woman deserves access to.

Whether you're living with PMDD, supporting someone who is, or trying to better understand how hormones shape mental and physical health, this post offers both scientific insight and emotional validation. You are not alone, and your pain—both emotional and physical—is real and worth addressing.
